There is more to education than what can be learned from sitting in a crowded lecture hall. In fact, you can even debate that traveling to a new country and learning about new cultures is more valuable than merely learning how to calculate the derivative of X.
But for some, the desire to travel is often put on hold to pursue a formal education. Many high school graduates are told to go straight to college so they can earn a degree and start working.
The truth is, you don’t have to decide between your education or your passion for travel. By pursuing an online degree, you can learn from anywhere in the world!
Is Online Education Worth It?
In the past, earning a degree online may have raised the eyebrows from potential employers. But these days, online degrees are well respected and even common for many graduates.
More than one-third of the University’s in the US offer online programs. In fact, 77% of academic leaders believe that an online degree is equal to or superior to a degree earned in a physical classroom.
And for those who crave adventure and freedom, online education is a no-brainer. As long as you have a laptop and internet, you can travel anywhere you want in the world. It’s the best way to fulfill your dream while also earning a bachelor or masters degree!
Pick the Right Online Program
Now that you’ve decided to pursue an online education, it’s time to buckle down and choose a school and major that fits your needs. And with dozens of online bachelor and master degrees available, choosing the right program can be tricky. You want a credible school, but also one that makes learning fun and engaging.
After you find a degree program that’s a fit, you need to vet the school. First and foremost, the online institution should be accredited. Accreditation simply means the school is recognized as a legitimate institution. This is important as you want to avoid scams and obvious, “degree mills.”
Another point, make sure the school you’re consider has excellent technical support. You will be completing your entire education online and as we all know; technology has a tendency to malfunction from time to time. Will the school you’re considering help you if you’re having issues? It’s vital you find an educational partner that’s there to support you throughout your entire education. For online programs, technical difficulties are bound to arise so thoroughly research student support services before making the leap.
Don’t forget to consider financial aid. Online degree programs are usually less expensive, but you may find you still need additional support.
Last, read reviews, reach out to previous students. Do all the research you can so you’re confident in your choice.
Commit to Your Education
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of living or traveling to a new country. And if you’re not on campus, it might be challenging to stay motivated. Trekking up a mountain or surfing in the ocean sounds way more appealing than writing a 10-page thesis, right?
But learning online means you need to be diligent about studying and completing your assignments in a timely manner. You’ll need to set aside time (and probably lots of it!) to make sure you stay on top of your work. Traveling in a new country doesn’t mean you’re on vacation!
Remember that earning a degree takes commitment, regardless of if it’s done online or on campus. But with a little determination and patience, you can earn your degree while having unforgettable travel experiences!
So go ahead and trade in the campus classroom for a beachside hammock. The world is calling, and you get to answer!
